Dancer and artist Isabelle Lewis on bringing ‘Immersive Spaces’ to Martin Gropius Bau Dina Elsayed

Isabelle Lewis is a dancer and artist, and this month you can experience her work at Martin Gropius Bau as part of the “Welt Ohne Aussen” festival. The festival explores immersive spaces from architecture to performance, to rave culture and tea drinking. Lewis was invited by the organizers to curate workshops that bring members of the public into immersive moments whether through dance or music.

We spoke to Lewis about her current project, which she sees as an antidote to a world where we consume an “overwhelming” amount of visual information daily. She celebrates the immersive experience for its effect on the audience, stating: “For me personally immersion is a kind of…a state of mind or a state of being, a state of heightened awareness which I think can come through engagement and absorption in practices.”

“Welt Ohne Aussen” runs until August 5 at Martin Gropius Bau.
